Saturday Spotlight

Today's author is Louise Erdrich.


1. Born on July 6, 1954, she is a Native American author of novels, poetry, and children's books.
2. She is a member of the Anishinaabe nation (aka Ojibwa and Chippewa) and grew up in North Dakota.
3. She earned her BA from Dartmouth College.
4. She then earned her MA in creative writing from Johns Hopkins University.
5. Her first novel, Love Medicine, was awarded the 1984 National Book Critics Circle Award.


6. Her 1989 novel (written with her husband), The Broken Cord, is about fetal alcohol syndrome, which her adopted son Reynold had.


7. Her recent novel, The Plague of Doves, was a finalist for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize.
