She was born in Illinois and raised in Ohio. She attended Ohio University and later earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Spalding University in Louisville. She has taught both middle school and high school English and Theater. She is the author of Traveling Light, Two Truths and a Lie, The Kindness of Strangers, and the newly released The Blessings of the Animals.
