Saturday Spotlight

Today's author is Toni Morrison.


1. She was born February 18, 1931 in Ohio.
2. She is is a Nobel Prize-winning American author, editor, and professor.
3. She earned her BA in English from Howard University.
4. She earned her MA in English from Cornell University.
5. She was an English instructor at Texas Southern University and Howard University.
6. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
7. She has worked as a textbook editor and general editor for Random House.
8. She wrote her first novel, The Bluest Eye, in 1970.


9. Her second novel, Sula, was nominated for the National Book Award.


10. Her third novel, Song of Solomon, was a main selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club and won the National Book Critics Circle Award.


11. Her novel Beloved won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction and was adapted into a film starring Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover.


12. In 1993 she became the first black woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.
13. In 1996 the National Endowment for the Humanities selected Morrison for the Jefferson Lecture.
14. Until recently, she held the Robert F. Goheen Chair in the Humanities at Princeton University.
15. She was nominated for a Grammy Award last year for Best Spoken Word Album for Children.
